Έχοντας αποκλείσει λόγω των κριτηρίων προϋπολογισμού –λιγότερο από 15 εκατομμύρια δολάρια – το Gravity και όλα τα παρόμοια του η ταινία «12 years a slave» του Steve Mc Queen σκαρφάλωσε ψηλά στον πίνακα των υποψηφιοτήτων για τα Independent Spirit Awards.
Η ταινία κατέληξε με 7 υποψηφιότητες μεταξύ των οποίων σκηνοθεσίας και ερμηνείας για τους:Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong’o και Michael Fassbender.

Στη δεύτερη θέση βρέθηκε το «Nebraska» Alexander Payne με 6 υποψηφιότητες ακολουθούμενο από «All Is Lost» του JC Chandor’s που έκλεισε με 4. Τα «Inside Llewyn Davis», «Short Term 12», «Fruitvale Station» και «Blue Jasmine» που ήταν όλα υποψήφια σε 3 κατηγορίες.

Η κατηγορία πρώτου αντρικού ρόλου επεκτάθηκε από τον συνήθη αριθμό των 5 υποψηφίων στους 6 και στον James Gandolfini θα αποδοθεί τιμητικό μεταθανάτιο βραβείο για τη συμμετοχή του στην ταινία «Enough said».Στην κατηγορία καλύτερης ξενόγλωσσης ταινίας θέση στις υποψηφιότητες βρήκαν τα «Blue Is the Warmest Color» και «The Great Beauty» μαζί με άλλες 3 ταινίες.

Αξιοσημείωτες παραλείψεις στον κατάλογο των σκηνοθετών είναι οι αδερφοί Κοέν των οποίων η ταινία «Inside Llewyn Davis» εμφανίζεται υποψήφια σε 3 κατηγορίες και ο συνάδελφος τους σκηνοθέτης Noah Baumbach (και το αστέρι Greta Gerwig) η ταινία του οποίου, «Frances Ha», είναι υποψήφια για καλύτερη εικόνα και καλύτερο μοντάζ. Τα «Way Way Back», «The Place Beyond the Pines» και «August:Osage County» προφανώς δεν επιλέχτηκαν και δε κατάφεραν να εισχωρήσουν σε καμία κατηγορία.
